Zin: Govt has no power to close toll plazas
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 – The government has no power to close toll plazas which cause traffic congestion during peak hours, Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed said today.
He told the Dewan Rakyat that the ministry could ask the highway concessionaire to make infrastructure improvements on the toll plaza to smoothen traffic flow.
“According to the concession agreement, we cannot take action at will in non-compliance of the agreement. So for us to order a shut down, it is not in the agreement,” he told Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) who wanted to know whether the government had the power to stop the Damansara-Puchong Expressway operator from collecting tolls because of congestion that often occurred at the plazas.
Zin said the expressway operator had made various efforts to reduce congestion at the two toll plazas in Puchong.
“Six toll booths have been added at the Puchong Barat and Puchong Selatan toll plazas. The government has also done promotions to encourage highway users to pay the toll electronically.
“To overcome the congestion at toll plazas for the long term, the government plans to implement the Multi Lane Free Flow toll collection which is still under study,” he said. – Bernama
